The Telegraph is hiring a

Junior Product Designer

London

About The Role

The Telegraph are looking for a Product Designer to join our award winning in-house Product Design team.

It’s an exciting opportunity to define customer experiences across our mobile app and responsive web products, from the homepage, and digital editions to breaking news, subscription journeys and newsletters. You’ll play a key role in the future of how TheTelegraph communicates with its readers across new and pre-existing technologies.

We’re a friendly and empowered multidisciplinary team of designers and developers where experimentation and learning is encouraged. Day to day you’ll be working with core Editorial, Subscriptions, Product and Technology stakeholders to drive positive change to our user experiences whilst also gaining new subscribers.

About You

We’re looking for a hands-on designer who isn’t afraid to challenge a brief and strives to constantly find ways to evolve and iterate our experiences. You’ll have a keen eye for detail and a solid graphics background.

Information is key and you won’t be afraid to dig into data, session cams and heatmaps to get to the bottom of a problem. You’ll know failures are as important as successes and be able to build upon your learnings. Confident in presenting concepts to the design team and wider stakeholders, you’ll be capable of acting on feedback and knowing when to prioritise user experience over business goals and vice versa.

You’ll be happy working independently or collaboratively as part of a team, you’ll be self- motivated and a natural problem solver. You’ll be passionate about developing new andintuitive features that will engage our readers and create habits that keep them returning day after day.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design a range of features in order to communicate solutions, starting with journeys and sitemaps, working up to wireframes, high fidelity UI and prototypes
  • Work with stakeholders to design iterative A/B and MVT testing programmes to validate your ideas, learning through failures as much as successes
  • Be a vital part of workshops with business owners, stakeholders and collaborators, capturing requirements and documenting outcomes
  • Be a motivated team player, ambitious in your thinking and brave in your designs, with the ability to perform well under pressure
  • Design end to end user experiences from concept through to developer handoff
  • Develop high quality visual designs with a keen eye for typography, colour theory, grid systems and knowledge of user interface approaches across a range of digital platforms including responsive web and app
  • Contribute to The Telegraph Design System
  • Be able to clearly articulate your design thinking and process with robust rationale for your design decisions
  • Create bespoke experiences and designs, utilising animation and prototyping tools, to bring your ideas to life during presentations
  • Be confident in presenting to stakeholders of any seniority, collating feedback and translating into actions with the team
  • Be keen to learn and comfortable with experimenting to find the best possible outcome, working on a range of projects, from the big to the small, the experimental to the practical

Essential skills required for the role

  • A strong portfolio demonstrating your design process and thinking, a good eye for graphic design, digital design patterns and interactions, and understanding of product development process
  • A BA in a design related degree, or similar experience
  • Experience and knowledge of design software, such as Figma, Sketch and Adobe Creative
  • Cloud, as well as prototyping tools, such as Invision, etc.

Additional skills useful for the role

  • Experience in front end development
  • Previous work experience in news media organisations or subscription industries
  • Able to create graphic items to support the design, including icons, illustrations, animations and interactions.
  • Experience of working with and managing a Design System
