Web User Experience Designer

The University of Maryland, Baltimore Office of Communications and Public Affairs

is currently recruiting for a Web User Experience (UX) Designer (IT Web Developer). This position is responsible for the design and development of user-centered websites and web-based applications, ensuring alignment with University standards and best practices in user experience. The Web UX Designer applies a variety of techniques and tools to conduct user research, define information architecture, and create wireframes, prototypes, and mockups that improve navigation and overall site usability.

Primary Duties

  • Analyzes and restructures existing websites to improve navigation, usability, and overall information architecture.
  • Conducts UX research (e.g., usability testing, card sorting, surveys, and stakeholder interviews) to inform design decisions and validate user needs.
  • Develops content inventories, sitemaps, wireframes, and prototypes to effectively communicate user interaction and site architecture.
  • Designs intuitive navigation systems and content structures that improve user journeys and bring clarity to complex websites.
  • Uses the University’s Content Management System (CMS) to design, update, and maintain site structures.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders to align restructuring with strategic goals, content priorities, and accessibility requirements.
  • Supports multiple UX projects simultaneously, ensuring deliverables are completed on time, within scope, and to a high standard of quality.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Systems Administration, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

Experience

Minimum experience requires knowledge of at least one (1) structured programming languages and relational database management systems. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures (i.e., HTML, CSS, JavaScript/VBScript, ASP, PHP, .NET, Perl, Python, and Index Server).

Preferred Experience

Experience in user experience (UX), information architecture, or interaction design preferred. Proficiency in wireframing and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, or similar) preferred. Experience designing and testing navigation systems for higher education or large organizations preferred. Experience with web analytics tools such as Google Analytics to gather insights and inform design preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of UX principles, information architecture, and user-centered design practices.
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and CMS environments.
  • Ability to conduct and analyze UX research to inform decisions and improve usability.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas clearly through diagrams, flows, and structured documentation.
  • Strong consultative and collaboration skills for assessing user needs and working with stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG) and responsive design best practices.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency in UI/visual design, including layout, typography, and use of color to support usability and brand consistency.
  • Ability to design and maintain component-based design systems in tools such as Figma or Sketch.
  • Knowledge of content strategy and content modeling.

Hiring Range
