The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary

UBCs Learning Technology Innovation Centre (LTIC) mandate is to catalyze and elevate learning technology application, innovation, and inquiry at UBC. Under academic leadership, the LTIC is charged with meeting UBCs needs for faculty and students in using and transforming learning technology, including playing a pivotal role in the support of Artificial Intelligence in research, development, and education, across the entirety of UBC. This work is university‑wide in reach and directly aligned with UBCs Strategic Directions, carrying significant reputational impact for the institution across potential donors, government partners, external collaborators, and the broader research community.

The Web Designer is responsible for the creation of a cohesive user experience for digital assets that advance the LTIC online presence including the units top-level web presence and LTIC digital assets. The position supports the ongoing evolution and adoption of digital standards and plays a lead role in facilitating the design operations (DesignOps) of digital design work for core assets, working alongside both technical and creative functions in a multi-disciplinary configuration. Working closely with the Learning Technology Web Services team, the Web Designer also supports the operational delivery of digital communications services.

Organizational Status

The Web Designer reports to the Associate Director, Operational Strategy & Administration, and works with colleagues across the LTIC as well as with other web strategists and communication teams at UBC. The work of the Web Designer is also guided by technical team members to ensure alignment within the overall systems infrastructure, architecture, and digital standards.

Work Performed

Visual & Interaction Design

  • Develops visually refined and aesthetically cohesive digital designs that strengthen the units brand presence and engage diverse audiences across web and digital channels.
  • Leads the visual direction of digital design work, making considered decisions about layout, typography, colour systems, motion, and imagery that elevate the quality and consistency of LTICs digital communications.
  • Collaborates with creative and technical team members to ensure visual design solutions are both aspirational and implementable within existing systems and standards whilst maintaining conformance with accessibility guidelines.

Strategy & Project Planning

  • Participates in planning and project kick-off meetings to help inform scope of work and project plans.
  • Participates in multi-functional meetings to help identify pathways for digital systems and content to meet defined digital standards in brand, visual identity, accessibility, and performance.

Analytics & Research

  • Configures, analyzes, and reports website metrics using industry-standard analytics and UX research tools.
  • Conducts and/or coordinates research activities including heuristic evaluations, user interviews, usability tests, and website UI audits.
  • Creates and updates standardized reports and dashboards to provide consistent reporting on web analytics, performance, and digital standards across multiple digital channels.

Systems Design

  • Completes website audits, reviewing existing web layouts and functionality with the aim of consolidating disparate properties into a cohesive system.
  • Creates, manages, and maintains design resources in a design system library, working closely with developers to ensure design work can be integrated into codebases.
  • Designs UI components and layouts, aligned with the design system, that sets standards for digital design.
  • Carries out ongoing design iterations of high-profile digital assets including websites, email templates, digital signage, and SaaS tools used by the unit.
  • Stays current with design system and design ops skills and knowledge, sharing best practices with other team members.
  • Works with other team members to identify, research, articulate, and design new features for the design system.
  • Carries out quality assurance testing on websites and other digital communications assets to assess adherence to digital standards.

Product Design

  • Designs user interface elements and layouts for web properties and applications, integrating the design system components into product-level design.
  • Creates prototypes and proof-of-concepts to validate design and technical options.
  • Joins project teams to implement new website and application builds, building websites and web apps using available CMS tools and resources to achieve designated standards, and preparing websites and applications for handoff to maintainers and owners.
  • Assists product/channel owners with using design system features in their own products/channels, and acts as a liaison to articulate emerging needs that may be addressed by the design system.

Operations

In coordination with other members of the Learning Technology Web Services team this role provides rotating coverage for core operations including:

  • Day to day digital channel management including content updates, quality and accuracy checks, adherence to established digital standards, and conformance with accessibility standards and web performance benchmarks.
  • Fulfilling service support requests through the ticketing system, for example supplying templates and files, troubleshooting use of digital brand assets etc.
  • Providing training, consultation and guidance to end-users of digital communications tools, templates, and services.
  • Maintaining comprehensive documentation for their area of expertise, ensuring information stays updated to reflect the digital systems and tools as they evolve.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position plays a key role in designing frameworks that directly affect the quality and reputation of the units digital assets and, further, creates resources that are relied upon across the organization. Poor decisions and mistakes could have a negative impact on the reputation of the university.

Supervision Received

This position functions as part of a multi-functional team, and reports to the Associate Director, Operational Strategy, and Administration. The role operates with a high degree of autonomy within broad guidelines and priorities established by the unit.

Supervision Given

This position may supervise student staff and oversee work completed by other team members and may on occasion review work from third parties.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A strong portfolio demonstrating visual design skills with an emphasis on web and digital applications.
  • Experience applying brand and visual identity systems to digital design work.
  • Prior work experience in a large complex organization preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience as a UX or UI designer working with design systems required.
  • Experience using modern design tools to create functional, accessible, and standards-based designs.
  • Experience working both independently and within a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills with the ability to give and receive feedback required.
  • Experience working in teams with diverse representation of background experiences, communication and learning styles a definite asset.
  • Ability to recognize, respect and work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
