Product Designer - Subscription Journeys (7 Month Contract)

We’re looking for a talented Product Designer to join The Telegraph’s award-winning Product Design team, working at the heart of our subscriptions experience. You’ll focus on the journeys that convert readers into subscribers and keep them engaged: from paywalls, checkouts and onboarding to retention flows, churn strategies and subscription management. This is a high-impact role where great design directly supports our subscriber growth and retention targets.

Working closely with Product Managers, Engineers, Editorial and Subscriptions stakeholders, you’ll design, test and refine experiences that balance user needs with business goals. You’ll use data, research and experimentation to inform your work — and you’ll be comfortable validating your ideas through unmoderated and moderated testing.

This role is suited to a mid-to-senior designer: confident leading projects end-to-end, while still keen to collaborate, learn and grow as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver end-to-end subscription journeys, from paywall interactions through to checkout, onboarding and retention.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers, Engineers and business stakeholders to shape requirements and align design solutions to strategy.
  • Run and participate in user research, employing a mix of moderated and unmoderated methods to validate design decisions.
  • Create user journeys, flows, wireframes, prototypes and high-fidelity visuals that communicate ideas clearly.
  • Contribute to iterative A/B and multivariate testing programmes to optimise conversion and retention.
  • Ensure designs are accessible, on-brand and consistent across web and app platforms.
  • Present design work with clarity and rationale to peers and stakeholders, and act on feedback constructively.
  • Contribute to and help evolve The Telegraph Design System, ensuring subscription flows are aligned with broader standards.
  • Mentor and support more junior designers, sharing feedback, process and best practice.

We’re looking for a designer who is:

  • User-focused: You’re comfortable talking to users, testing designs and using evidence to inform decisions.
  • Detail-oriented: You care about typography, spacing, visual polish and interaction quality.
  • Analytical: You’re comfortable digging into numbers, heatmaps or research findings to understand performance.
  • Collaborative: You work well with developers, stakeholders and other designers, adapting your communication style to your audience.
  • Resilient and curious: You see iteration and experimentation as part of the process, not just the end result.

Essential skills

  • Strong portfolio showing user-centred design process and high-quality execution across digital products.
  • Professional experience working on end-to-end product design (ideally including subscription, checkout or e-commerce flows).
  • Experience running or contributing to user research (both moderated and unmoderated).
  • Skilled in design and prototyping tools (Figma preferred).
  • Excellent understanding of usability, accessibility and responsive design.
  • Strong communication skills, comfortable presenting to stakeholders at all levels.
