Product Designer - Engine by Starling

At Engine by Starling

We are on a mission to find and work with leading banks around the world who have the ambition to build rapid growth businesses on our technology. Engine is Starling's software-as-a-service (SaaS) business, the technology that powers Starling Bank. A year ago, we split out as a separate business. Starling Bank has seen exceptional growth and success, largely due to our modern technology built from the ground up. This SaaS technology platform is now available to banks and financial institutions worldwide, enabling them to benefit from innovative digital features and efficient back-office processes that have contributed to Starling's success.

We draw upon our experience as FinTech experts and best-in-class technologists to become the chosen option for these banks and preferred partners for leading consultancies. As a company, everyone is expected to roll up their sleeves to help deliver great outcomes for our clients. We are an engineering-led company, and we’re looking for someone who will be excited by the potential for Engine’s technology to transform banking in different markets around the world.

Hybrid Working

We have a hybrid approach here at Engine; our preference is that you're located within a commutable distance of one of our offices to allow for in-person interaction and collaboration.

About the Role

At Engine by Starling, we’re at an exciting point of our journey, building a series of mobile SDKs and web portals to delight our clients as we help them bring best-in-class digital banking to customers around the world. We spend our time building products that we’re really proud of. We focus on the experience, often delivering things with real polish but sometimes making fast strategic moves. We’re always working closely and collaboratively with our product teams and clients to solve problems, build new products, and improve existing ones.

You’ll be able to own the design of products and features, working closely with the rest of the Engine team to design the product, and then staying involved as our engineering team builds, ensuring the outcome is as good as possible. The Engine team works with clients worldwide. Some of the interesting challenges will be balancing the needs of both clients and their customers, creating journeys that work in multiple regions.

Responsibilities

  • Work across multiple product areas solving complex, ambiguous problems with product owners and tech leads.
  • Contribute to the entire product development lifecycle, from discovery through to delivery.
  • Design the visual and functional experience of our mobile SDKs and web portals for product domains such as cards, lending, saving, onboarding, open banking, and payments.
  • Maintain and develop our multi-brand design system to ensure a consistent user experience across all our platforms.
  • Ensure our products are designed and documented to a standard that enables rapid adoption and meaningful configuration by our clients.
  • Champion design both internally and externally, demonstrating how best-in-class design can transform banking.

Required Qualifications

  • 4+ years experience as a UX/Product Designer.
  • Lots of examples of designing thoughtful, accessible experiences for customers.
  • Ability to communicate design decisions, strategies, and concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Accomplished visual design quality - able to guide and evolve our design language to the next level.
  • Experience planning and running various research methods to test and evaluate ideas.
  • Proficiency in working with Figma and prototyping tools.
  • Ability to work confidently with a design system.
  • Examples of partnering with cross-functional stakeholders and product owners.
  • An inclination to seek feedback, share your work, and be open. The Engine team is collaborative and friendly, encouraging everyone to share their opinions and contribute.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in a Product Design role for a FinTech or Software Startup/Scaleup, ideally with mobile design experience.
  • Experience with B2B/B2B2C products or environments where we balance both customer and client needs.
  • Practical experience maintaining and contributing to a design system, including design tokens, extending beyond Figma and UI components.
  • Illustration skills and strong craft for creating custom iconography and visual assets.
  • Bachelor's degree in Design, HCI, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).

Interview Process

Interviewing is a two-way process, and we want you to have the opportunity to get to know us as we get to know you. Our interviews are conversational, and we want to get the best from you, so come with questions and be curious.

You can expect the following, following a chat with one of our Talent Team:

  • First 45-minute interview with someone from our Design team.
  • In-depth 60-minute interview with the Design team and an Engineer, where we’ll look to see a case study of a project from start to finish to show your thinking, how you worked with the team, and to highlight your design craft.
