User Experience Designer

The Role

Were looking for a UX Designer who is energized by talking to customers, uncovering complex workflows, and turning them into simple, thoughtful experiences. This is a role for someone who brings strong design craft, sharp problem-solving, and a genuine interest in how people work in the real world.

The Team

The UX team works within Pasons Research and Development (R&D) department and is responsible for product research and design. Our motto is Technology Deployed Simply, and this role brings that idea to life. Youll collaborate with project teams and fellow designers to create interfaces that are intuitive, practical, and easy to use in high-stress environments. Youll also spend time with customers in offices and on drilling rigs across North America, so a love of user research—and a willingness to get out into the field—is essential.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

As a User Experience Designer, youll help create delightful software that is clear, useful, and grounded in the realities of our rig users work. Youll advocate for the rig user, partner closely with cross-functional teams, and play a key role in turning research and insight into thoughtful product design. This role involves:

  • Putting a voice to the customer problem through field research and user interviews.
  • Designing research-backed, intuitive screens and workflows for Pasons field application.
  • Conducting design reviews, usability walkthroughs, and iterating based on stakeholder feedback and user testing inputs.
  • Clearly communicating concepts and design rationale using paper and pencil sketches, wireframes, high fidelity mockups, prototypes, and presentations.
  • Leading and contributing to design critiques by exploring alternative perspectives and asking thoughtful questions about how and why problems are being solved.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to align teams, explain tradeoffs, and drive clarity in ambiguous spaces.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • 5+ years working in User Experience Research & Design.
  • Formal education in Human-Computer Interaction, Information Design, User Experience Design, Human Factors, or Industrial Design.
  • Class 5 Alberta Drivers License and the ability to drive a rental or company vehicle to the field when needed.
  • A valid passport, as some travel with Western Canada and to the U.S. is required for field research.
  • High proficiency in Figma – components, auto-layout, variants, prototyping, and library management.
  • Knowledge of product development processes and lifecycles.

Experience

  • 5+ years working in User Experience Research & Design.
  • Class 5 Alberta Drivers License and the ability to drive a rental or company vehicle to the field when needed.
  • A valid passport, as some travel with Western Canada and to the U.S. is required for field research.
  • High proficiency in Figma – components, auto-layout, variants, prototyping, and library management.
  • Knowledge of product development processes and lifecycles.
  • Experience working in an agile environment.
  • Knowledge of the Oil and Gas Drilling industry would be considered an asset.
  • Team Leadership skills.
  • Field research experience would be considered an asset.

Education

Formal education in Human-Computer Interaction, Information Design, User Experience Design, Human Factors, or Industrial Design.

Hybrid Work Environment

This position allows an employee to work in a hybrid environment where a portion of their role is in the office and the other portion remote.
