Product Design Technician

POSITION SUMMARY

The Product Design Technician will play a crucial role in the development and realization of innovative product designs. This role involves collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams to bring concepts to life through research, layout, design, drafting, prototyping, testing, cost estimation, and refinement.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS – (depending on area of assignment)

  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to understand project requirements and objectives.
  • Translate design concepts or product category rules (PCRs) into detailed technical drawings and specifications using CAD software.
  • Create accurate and precise 3D models and prototypes of product designs for evaluation and testing.
  • Document and maintain comprehensive records of design iterations, specifications, testing results, and installation instructions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet optimum design alternatives, technical feasibility, manufacturing requirements, and that design solutions are seamlessly integrated into final products.
  • Utilize various prototyping techniques and tools to produce, test and analyze physical prototypes for improvement or optimization.
  • Iterate on designs based on feedback from testing, making adjustments as necessary to enhance functionality, usability, and aesthetics.
  • Assist in the selection and sourcing of materials and components for prototypes and production.
  • Contribute to the development of manufacturing processes and assembly techniques to streamline production.
  • Uphold high standards of quality, precision, and craftsmanship in all aspects of work.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in product design and prototyping.
  • Demonstrate regular attendance and timeliness in reporting to work, meetings, and completing assignments.
  • Ability to work and interact well with others.

Product Design

  • Develop new product designs and incorporate revisions to existing products.
  • Analyze cost data, sales requests, customer quote requests, electronic change orders (ECO's), and new item releases (NIR's) for cost reduction or functional enhancements.
  • Guide projects through processes remaining accountable to final outcome.
  • Determine when samples need to be fabricated to validate fit/function parameters and/or require customer approval.
  • Review and/or generate necessary drawings or markups and assist support personnel in design-related matters.

Process Improvement

  • Analyze existing processes and procedures used for design, cost estimation, drawing, and data release.
  • Create solutions to minimize complexity or misuse in current processes to reduce waste or simplify steps.
  • Create tools to assist with efficiency and accuracy, such as calculators, templates, forms or coded shortcuts.
  • Develop materials to train other employees on tools that have been created.

Packaging Support

  • Design, develop, implement, test and analyze optimal packaging performance and solutions, including durability and safety during storage, transportation, and usage.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to make packaging solutions efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

May work as a backup for NIR Engineer, packaging support, or ECO signoff engineer.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor degree in industrial design, mechanical engineering, product design, or another related field is preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in drafting, product design, prototyping, or other relevant experience, if degreed. Minimum of 4 years of experience in drafting, product design, prototyping, or other relevant experience, if non-degreed.

Required Skills

  • Previous computer design software experience.
  • Possess basic design skills with some mechanical aptitude.
  • Strong competency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word.

Preferred Skills

  • Previous manufacturing or engineering support experience.
  • Knowledge of products and data systems.
  • Ability to analyze cost data and identify cost reduction opportunities.
  • Knowledge of company software (Jira, Confluence, Oracle).
  • Knowledge of store fixture products and product lines.
