Key Responsibilities

  • Design Leadership & Strategy: Lead the creation and evolution of a comprehensive design system that balances consistency with innovation. Partner with design leadership to align design strategy with broader objectives, advocating for user needs in product roadmap decisions. Help establish design principles and frameworks that guide decision-making across the organization, embedding user-centered thinking into company culture.
  • Product Design & Craft Excellence: Own end-to-end UX/UI design for complex, multi-faceted product initiatives from concept through launch and iteration. Transform educational curriculum and pedagogy into intuitive, engaging digital experiences that enhance comprehension and maintain learner motivation. Produce implementation-ready, polished final designs and interaction specifications, alongside prototypes that communicate the intended behavior, motion, feel, and quality bar clearly to cross-functional teams.
  • Design Systems & Standards: Extend and maintain a comprehensive design system that enables consistency, efficiency, and quality at scale. Create reusable component libraries, interaction patterns, and visual guidelines that support rapid development while maintaining craft excellence. Lead by example through work that demonstrates attention to detail, accessibility, and user delight.
  • Research & User Insights: Synthesize qualitative and quantitative user research insights into actionable design opportunities and strategic recommendations. Partner with data teams to establish and monitor design success metrics, using analytics to inform iterative improvements. Build deep empathy and expertise around the needs of K-12 learners across diverse contexts and demographics.
  • Team Development & Mentorship: Mentor and develop designers at various career stages, providing guidance on craft, process, career growth, and design leadership.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate closely with production, engineering, and curriculum design stakeholders as a strategic partner. Work with educators to balance pedagogical integrity with engaging user experiences.
  • Strategic Innovation: Influence product strategy by identifying unmet user needs and opportunity spaces through design exploration. Drive innovation by identifying emerging design patterns, technologies, and methodologies that could enhance learning experiences.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of UX/UI design experience with a portfolio demonstrating sophisticated product and interaction design work and measurable impact on user outcomes and business metrics.
  • 3+ years in leadership roles where youve influenced product strategy, mentored designers, or led cross-functional initiatives.
  • Deep expertise across the full design process: information architecture, interaction design, visual design, prototyping, and design systems.
  • Proven track record of designing complex digital products from 0-to-1 or leading significant redesigns that drove engagement and retention.
  • Strong systems thinking with experience building or evolving design systems that scale across multiple product surfaces.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard design tools (Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.) and prototyping tools like Protopie or Rive.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to communicate with stakeholders at all levels, from engineers to executives.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in ambiguous, fast-paced environments while maintaining quality standards.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Background in education, child development, learning science, or instructional design with an understanding of how design impacts learning.
  • Experience designing for K-12 audiences with age-appropriate considerations for cognitive load, motivation, and developmental stages.
  • Motion design or animation skills with the ability to design and direct micro-interactions, transitions, and celebration moments.
  • Experience leading or contributing to design teams in a player-coach capacity.
  • Track record of building or scaling design functions, including hiring, process development, and culture building.
  • Accessibility expertise with experience implementing WCAG standards and designing for diverse abilities and learning needs.
  • Technical fluency with an understanding of front-end development constraints and opportunities (Unity, Godot, Unreal, WebGL).
  • Experience with design operations, establishing metrics and measurement frameworks for design impact.
