Role Overview

As a Principal Product Designer, you are a visionary lead responsible for defining the future of the HCP user experience, with a particular focus on shaping how AI transforms the way our Pros run their businesses. You operate at the intersection of high-level strategy and technical execution, driving architectural-level design decisions that impact our entire product ecosystem. You dont just design interfaces; you design systems and workflows that leverage AI native tools to solve complex problems for our Pros. A core part of your charter is leading the design of HCPs AI-powered experiences, from intelligent automation to smart recommendations, ensuring they feel intuitive, trustworthy, and genuinely useful to the Pros who depend on them. You are expected to be a force multiplier, mentor to the design team, and a key partner to product and engineering leadership in shaping our long-term roadmap.

What you do each day:

  • Lead the design strategy for complex, high-impact product areas that align with HCPs long-term goals, with an emphasis on AI-driven product experiences
  • Define and drive the design vision for HCPs AI features, translating complex AI capabilities into clear, intuitive workflows for Pros
  • Build and maintain sophisticated prototypes that push the boundaries of current product capabilities
  • Architect scalable design systems that ensure consistency across all platforms and touchpoints
  • Drive cross-functional alignment by communicating design vision to executive leadership and stakeholders
  • Mentor and elevate the craft of the broader design team through critiques and best-practice sharing
  • Integrate AI-driven workflows into the product experience to automate manual tasks for our Pros
  • Collaborate with engineering to ensure high-fidelity implementation of complex interactions
  • Analyze user data and feedback to iterate on product features and improve overall usability
  • Identify and mitigate design risks before they impact the development cycle
  • Advocate for the user at every stage of the product development lifecycle

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to leverage AI tools to improve workflows, streamline execution, or enhance outputs
  • Exceptional system-thinking skills and the ability to see how individual features fit into the macro ecosystem
  • High degree of comfort with ambiguity and the ability to pivot based on new data or technology shifts
  • Proactive mindset with a preference for actively using emerging AI tools in your daily workflow
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to tell a compelling story around design decisions
  • A "builder" mentality that favors functional prototyping over static mocks
  • Deep empathy for small business owners and the challenges of the trades industry

What will help you succeed:

  • 10+ years of experience in product design or a related field or equivalent work experience
  • Proven track record of leading design for complex SaaS products at scale
  • Strong prototyping and product development capabilities with a focus on functional output
  • Advanced proficiency in design and prototyping tools (i.e. Figma, Framer, Principle)
  • Comfort working in tools like Figma, though it is not your primary focus for execution
  • Familiarity with AI/code-assisted platforms (i.e. Claude, Cursor, Codex)
  • Deep understanding of modern front-end technologies and how they influence design feasibility
  • Bachelors degree in Design, HCI, or equivalent work experience

Location Dependent Information

This role is open to candidates and the expected salary range for this role is $150,000-$175,000 + bonus + equity. The specific salary for the successful candidate will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location. This role is also eligible to participate in Housecall Pros equity plan and the following benefits: health care insurance (medical, dental, vision, disability), employee assistance program, 401(K), flexible time off, paid parental leave, tech reimbursement, and other company benefits.
