Overview

GitHub is looking for an experienced Product Designer to join the Design team. At GitHub, we build solutions that improve the developer experience so they can learn, collaborate, automate, build, and deliver software with quality and confidence. In this role youll have the opportunity to work extensively on designing Security, Enterprise, and Platform products at GitHub.

Were looking for a high‑craft, detail‑oriented, systems‑minded designer who thinks end‑to‑end and brings strong critical thinking to complex problem spaces. This person can zoom out to define cohesive journeys across products, and zoom in to sweat the details—interaction, language, and overall UX quality. Familiarity with frontend languages and coding concepts is important to navigate ambiguity, partner effectively with engineering, and help advance ideas through prototypes and code‑based concepts.

The GitHub Product Design Team is a group of talented individuals with varied backgrounds in product design, design systems, design ops, front-end development, and illustration. Youll prioritize customer experiences, working closely with systems designers, engineers, technical writers, and product management to create and push for high-quality design. You will collaborate on platform-wide and AI-driven UX solutions, partnering across disciplines to champion high standards, inspire transformative solutions, and continually expand your expertise at the intersection of vision and detail.

We are looking for an excellent communicator who aligns and influences cross‑functional partners, navigates ambiguity and constraints with clarity, thinks in systems, raises the quality bar, and actively grows the team through mentorship, feedback, and strong craft leadership.

Staff Product Designers at GitHub are expert individual contributors; theyre given a lot of autonomy and trust to work on our most impactful design projects. For this specific role, you will report directly to the Senior Director of Product Design.

Responsibilities

Shaping: Defining great products and developer experiences with a point of view, where good defaults and what not to include is as intentional as essential as what makes it into the final solution.
Systems thinking: This role requires a designer who can think systematically when it comes to information architecture as well as existing and emerging UI patterns.
Progress and tempo: its easy to get caught up in the meta-design details, so our team must be mindful that we keep making decisions and move forward quickly. We prioritize progress over correctness.
Curiosity: In a fast-paced environment like AI and LLMs, our designers remain curious and comfortable learning about existing and upcoming new capabilities to identify opportunities.

  • Design responsive and accessible experiences that work across multiple platforms.
  • Explore and shape solutions for existing and new AI experiences based on existing and upcoming model capabilities.
  • Provide regular design feedback and direction to your coworkers.
  • Seek out opportunities for connecting with people and teams working on related projects.
  • Build meaningful relationships across the product, engineering, and other cross-functional partners youre working with.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years experience in product or service design OR Bachelors Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 8+ years experience in product or service design OR Masters Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 6+ years experience in product or service design OR Doctorate in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 4+ years experience in product or service design OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience as a Product Designer working with Engineers, Product Managers, and other Designers.
  • Experience designing end to end complex, multi‑workflow SaaS products.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in enterprise environments, security domains, governance models, or other complex at scale systems.
  • A portfolio demonstrating high-craft, hands-on experience designing dev tools or SaaS products and interactions—especially if it includes AI-driven products.
  • Familiarity with frontend languages and coding concepts.
  • Experience designing for Large Language Models and AI.
  • Experience designing for developer tools.
  • Experience contributing to or using an established design system.
