Requirements Job Overview

The Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), under the School of Foreign Service, is hiring a UX Engineer. In this role, the UX Engineer will own UX improvements end-to-end, from user research and prototyping through implementation and release. They will be part of CSETs Data Team; working collaboratively with software engineers, data scientists, and research fellows to design, build, improve, and maintain user-friendly and accessible websites and dynamic interfaces for our Emerging Technology Observatory (ETO). The UX Engineer will also partner with CSETs Communications team and external web vendor to support appealing and consistent design, implementation, and user experience across CSETs digital presence.

About CSET & the Emerging Technology Observatory

CSET is a research organization focused on studying the security impacts of emerging technologies, supporting academic work in security and technology studies, and delivering nonpartisan analysis to technologists and policymakers. CSET currently focuses on artificial intelligence, advanced computing, and biotechnology. CSET is located in Georgetown Universitys Capitol Campus near Union Station. CSETs Emerging Technology Observatory is a free public platform for data and insight on critical emerging technology issues. Building on CSETs unique data and analytic capabilities, ETO provides analytic tools and datasets to help users across government, academia, nonprofits, and the private sector understand and act on global emerging technology trends.

Responsibilities/Work Interactions

The UX Engineer will report to the Director of Data Science and Research and will be responsible for:

  • Building, testing, and deploying front-end code (primarily using React; other frameworks as needed) for ETO websites and other CSET digital products
  • Designing and conducting user research (e.g., interviews) and translating findings into actionable UX recommendations and priorities
  • Coordinating with the Data Team, Communications Team, and CSETs web vendor to drive cohesive, visually consistent UI/UX improvements across ETO and CSET websites and digital products
  • Partnering with stakeholders to select and prioritize features that address user needs while aligning with CSETs brand
  • Implementing design and usability improvements on wireframes, product prototypes (betas), released products, and digital platforms
  • Creating mockups and delivering production-ready code, sites, and interfaces
  • Developing and conducting usability and accessibility testing plans, including ensuring WCAG accessibility compliance for all releases
  • Supporting and streamlining digital publication workflows for CSET products, including integration of interactive data visualizations
  • Monitoring trends and developments in AI, ML, biotechnology, and national security policy
  • Contributing to CSETs organizational development, including internal working groups, seminars, and discussions; and supporting and mentoring colleagues
  • Upholding CSETs mission, values, and culture
  • Additional duties as assigned

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree
  • A minimum of 7 years of user interface design and development experience (can include graduate coursework)
  • Proficiency in Javascript, HTML, and CSS
  • Experience using Figma or similar tools for prototyping and collaboration
  • Experience using modern frameworks such as React (via Gatsby, Next.js, or similar) or Astro
  • Experience working in a cloud-hosted environment (e.g., GCP, AWS, or similar)
  • Ability to work successfully in a highly collaborative team environment, with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • High degree of flexibility as requirements and priorities evolve
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • Motivated, enthusiastic, intellectually curious, and self-driven
  • Alignment with CSETs mission, values, and culture
  • Ability to work in the United States without employer sponsorship

This position is based in the United States and offers no relocation assistance. This position is not eligible for a specialty-occupation sponsorship and, accordingly, this position requires that all applicants be legally eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship from Georgetown University. This position is designated as hybrid, which means candidates will be expected to work from CSETs D.C. office at least 2-3 days per week.

Preferred Additional Qualifications

Our ideal applicant would have at least 1-2 of the following additional skills:

  • Knowledge of front-end testing and CI/CD workflows
  • Experience with SQL and Python, or interest in learning
  • Experience working in Google Cloud Platform, or interest in learning
  • Experience writing technical documentation
  • Experience collaborating on GitHub

Pay Range

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is: $80,429.00 - $157,238.93. Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidates individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the Universitys business needs and external factors.
