Product Design Lead (UI Focus)

Allegheny County Department of Human Services – Office of Analytics, Technology & Design
Location: Pittsburgh, PA (Hybrid)
Team: Design
Reports to: Director of UX Design

About the Role

We’re looking for a Product Design Lead to help rebuild and modernize digital tools and services we build for Allegheny County residents and the staff who serve them. You’ll lead the UI side of our design process, partnering closely with the program offices who manage services, product managers, and engineers to bring a new paradigm of simplicity, efficiency, and clarity to what is always going to be a complex human services system. This is a chance to work on meaningful products that impact real lives at scale—while shaping the design culture within GovTech.

Responsibilities

  • Lead UI design across multiple digital products, from early concept through polished, production-ready interfaces
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with program teams, product managers, and engineers to deliver cohesive end-to-end experiences
  • Maintain and expand a design system to drive consistency, accessibility, and efficiency across tools and services
  • Coach and mentor designers on visual design best practices, interaction patterns, and craft
  • Establish visual design standards and advocate for design quality throughout the product development lifecycle
  • Prototype and test interface designs to gather feedback and iterate quickly
  • Contribute to product strategy by infusing design thinking into early discovery and 0→1 product efforts

You’re a good fit if you have:

  • 6+ years of experience in digital product design, with at least 2 years in a senior or lead role
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating mastery of visual design, interaction design, and design systems
  • Proven ability to ship high-quality UI in collaboration with cross-functional teams
  • Deep understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG) and inclusive design practices
  • Experience with modern design and prototyping tools (Figma, etc.)
  • Ability to balance craft excellence with pragmatic decision-making in a public sector context
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, and enthusiasm for guiding products through their lifecycle

If hired for a position, candidates would work for Allegheny County, Department of Human Services and be employed by CAI.
