Job Description

Job Summary:

The primary role of the UX Engineer is to design and refine intuitive user experiences for mission-critical software platforms. This role focuses on translating complex analyst workflows into clear, effective interfaces through user research, prototyping, and usability testing. You’ll collaborate closely with developers and end users to improve how data-driven tools are accessed, understood, and used in high-stakes environments.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Conduct user research, task analysis, and usability studies to identify workflow inefficiencies and user friction
  • Translate user needs into wireframes, user flows, and high-fidelity prototypes
  • Collaborate with developers and analysts to improve interaction patterns and usability
  • Advocate for user-centered design throughout the software development lifecycle
  • Facilitate feedback sessions and iterate designs based on end-user input
  • Ensure UX solutions align with mission requirements and secure environments
  • Support design efforts within fast-paced Agile development cycles

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience
  • Experience in UX design, usability testing, or user research
  • Experience conducting usability testing and producing UX artifacts
  • Hands-on experience with UX and prototyping tools such as Axure, Adobe Creative Cloud, or equivalent
  • Strong communication skills for collaborating across technical and non-technical teams
  • An active TS/SCI with Polygraph

Other Qualifications & Desired Competencies:

  • Experience designing UX for analytic, data-driven, or mission systems
  • Familiarity working in Agile development environments
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards and their application in secure or restricted systems

Salary Range:

$110,000 – $145,000
The pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Determination of official compensation or salary relies on several factors including, but not limited to, level of position, job responsibilities, geographic location, scope of relevant work experience, educational background, certifications, contract-specific affordability, organizational requirements, alignment with local internal equity, as well as alignment with market data.

Clearance Level:

Top Secret with Poly

ITAR Requirement:

This position requires access to information that is subject to compliance with the International Traffic Arms Regulations (“ITAR”) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (“EAR”). In order to comply with the requirements of the ITAR and/or the EAR, applicants must qualify as a U.S. person under the ITAR and the EAR, or a person to be approved for an export license by the governing agency whose technology comes under its jurisdiction. Please understand that any job offer that requires approval of an export license will be conditional on AeroVironment’s determination that it will be able to obtain an export license in a time frame consistent with AeroVironment’s business requirements. A “U.S. person” according to the ITAR definition is a U.S. citizen, U.S. lawful permanent resident (green card holder), or protected individual such as a refugee or asylee. See 22 CFR § 120.15. Some positions will require current U.S. Citizenship due to contract requirements.
